The Wolfdog is also known as a Wolf Hybrid or a Dog and Wolf crossbreed as well as a Wolfdog. The proper described name is a Wolfdog.

The Wolfdog is also known as a Wolf Hybrid or a Dog and Wolf crossbreed as well as a Wolfdog. The proper described name is a Wolfdog. The Wolfdog is a cross between a wolf and a domestic or wild pack dog.

Many believe that calling the Wolfdog a hybrid is correct because they are bred with two different species a dog and a wolf, which is the same species. Therefore, a Wolfdog is not a hybrid. They are however an exotic animal that are banned in most cities.

When you breed a wolf with a dog such as a German Shepherd or an Alaskan Malamute you will have a Wolfdog. The wolf in question is usually a timber wolf. The breed distinction is usually a quarter to one-half timber wolf and the rest is the breed of the dog.

The Wolfdog is not a breed of dog as a breed is characterized as being bred for centuries for appearance, size, behavior and traits. This is a cross breed, therefore they are not considered a breed of dog.

Dog breeds are bred for characteristics where as Wolfdogs are bred for temperament and health. There is no consistency with breeding a wolf or a dog as far as content of one or the other. The more the puppy takes on of the wolf will determine how much wolf blood it has in its line.

There are four types of Wolfdogs recognized that include the Kunming Wolfdog, American Tundra Shepherd, Saarloos Wolfhound and the Czechoslovakian Wolfhound.

The Wolfdogs are more popular today, but they are not always the right pet. They are a loving and loyal dog, you would not find any other animal that will stand by you and never let anything happen to you. They may not be good with children or other pets, but this is not true of all Wolfdogs.

The Wolfdog does sometimes have independent nature. Nevertheless, it depends how you train them when they are small. They need love and will give just as much love back. They do need socialization and training to be a social dog.
