Your dog is very important to you and therefore safety is one of your highest concerns next to proper nutrition, exercise, and keeping them happy. You may feel keeping your dog enclosed all day is something that is cruel and a punishment, but you need to realize the type of enclosure you can have and the breed of dog. Some dogs are content to be lazy most of the day and require little exercise. Other dogs require plenty of space to live and cannot stand being cooped up inside all day long. This is where dog fences or enclosures come in.
To have a dog that requires plenty of space means you need a home with a good-sized backyard. You also need to train your dog to stay within the boundaries of the outdoor enclosure. Here are a few reasons why safety is important and why you might need some fencing. Safety is extremely important. Your dog could run off after an animal, get hit by a car, or meet another deadly animal depending on where you live. To avoid issues with your dog meeting danger when you leave them outside all day you need to have some type of enclosure. You will find the best type of enclosure is something that does not feel like an oversized cage.
In other words if your dog is small or they have been trained not to dig or jump fences you can buy a standard height without having some type of metal roof to create a complete enclosure. Also, keep in mind that you can have a run in the backyard that allows them the freedom to move around when they want, but to not run off. A run is more restricting and therefore one of the worst options. Of course, it will ultimately depend on the size of your yard and zoning requirements. You may feel you need a fence and a runner.
Electric Fencing
Your dog needs exercise so keeping them in the house is a cruelty when the weather is nice and you will be at work all day long. Therefore, you will want metal fencing, electric fencing, or a wood fence to keep your dog happy. I prefer wood fencing as it looks more attractive to the neighborhood, but metal fencing is also great because a dog is less likely to chew their way out. The electric fence though popular seems a little cruel. The electric fence is invisible to the dog, but they will get shocked when they try to cross it. This means you are in effect causing harm to the animal.
Training is also important when you consider the type of fence and the height. You will want to have your dog trained not to jump fences for fun when in the backyard. Some dogs may not learn this lessens and that is when a runner can become handy. It really depends on when you purchased the dog, whether you have had them from a puppy or someone else has.
